Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit has sent a stern warning to Mikel Arteta. With the Gunners enduring another trophyless campaign, pressure started mounting on Arteta, who piloted his team to the Champions League semi-finals this season but failed to overcome Paris Saint-Germain in the knockout clash. Petit, who won the Premier League with Arsenal in the 1997-98 season, feels Arteta must win a big title for the sake of his reputation as a coach. To make his points clear, the former French international drew a comparison with Xabi Alonso, who is set to take over the helm at Real Madrid next season.

Alonso has proven his calibre as the manager of Bayer Leverkusen over the last two-and-a-half years. His team became the Bundesliga champions last season, and that too without conceding a single defeat. Petit reckons Alonso was able to deliver beyond expectations, unlike Arteta, who has perhaps failed to match his potential.

“We all know the link between Barcelona and those who have spent time at the club. Mikel Arteta wasn’t there for long, but there is a connection there. I think the work that Mikel Arteta has done with Arsenal is very good, but he needs to win a big trophy," Petit said in an interview with BesteOnlineCasinoNederland.

“He needs to change the feel around his name, or it will always be that he failed at the last step. He is managing one of the biggest clubs in the world, and he has to change that feeling," he added.

Referring to Alonso, Petit said, “Alonso looks like he is going to Real Madrid because he has transformed Bayer Leverkusen and the mentality of the entire club. Mikel Arteta needs to change the feeling around his name, and that will be the important factor."

Arsenal have not won anything since 2020, when they defeated Chelsea to secure the FA Cup. The London giants opened the Premier League campaign on a commanding note this season. They, however, have lost the title race to Liverpool due to a series of poor performances in the second half. With two games in hand, Arsenal might finish second or third in the English top tier.
